To address the needs of Grades 1-3 slow and non-readers, PTC-CSJ Foundation and Synergeia Foundation, in partnership with 12 public elementary schools in Muntinlupa, launched Reading Camp 2022 on July 25.
Since 2016, PTC-CSJ and Synergeia have implemented the Reading Camp (RC) annually for 15 days during summer vacation. However, the initiative was put on hold in 2020 and 2021 when face-to-face classes were suspended due to the pandemic.
RC 2022 is piloting a specialized seven-day program from July 25 to August 2. The camp supports 580 Grades 1-3 learners, with 86 teachers each handling small classes of 6-10 students to ensure personalized attention.
Feeding is a vital intervention as many learners are also undernourished.
In addition to academic support, feeding is a core part of the intervention, as many RC learners are identified as undernourished. Nutritious snacks are served during classes to help students stay focused and healthy.
To measure the program's impact, pre- and post-tests are administered on the first and last days. Before the launch, all RC teachers underwent a rigorous one-day training guided by Synergeia President Dr. Milwida Guevara, who provided expertise on teaching modules and effective literacy strategies.
Dr. Milwida Guevara leads the training session for Reading Camp teachers.
As an incentive for their dedication, all participating teachers will receive four service credits. This was facilitated by PTC-CSJ and approved by DepEd-Muntinlupa Superintendent, Ms. Carleen S. Sedilla. Reading Camp 2022 remains a key component of the Foundation’s flagship Growing Good to Great Kids (3G) Program.
